IT job cuts: Up to 600,000 engineers likely to be laid off in next 3 years

McKinsey & Company report says half of IT workforce will be irrelevant over the next 3-4 years

Executive search firm Head Hunters India said the job cuts in IT sector will be between 1.75 lakh and 2 lakh annually for next three years due to under-preparedness in adapting to newer technologies.

"Contrary to media reports of 56,000 IT professionals to lose jobs this year, the actual job cuts will be between 1.75 lakh and 2 lakh per year in next three years, due to under- preparedness in adapting to newer technologies," Head Hunters India Founder-Chairman and MD K Lakshmikanth told PTI, analysing a report submitted by McKinsey & Company at the Nasscom India Leadership Forum on February 17.

McKinsey & Company report had said nearly half of the workforce in the IT services firms will be "irrelevant" over the next 3-4 years.

McKinsey India Managing Director Noshir Kaka had also said the bigger challenge ahead for the industry will be to retrain 50-60 per cent of the workforce as there will be a significant shift in technologies. The industry employs 3.9 million people and the majority of them have to be retrained.

"So, when we analyse these figures, it is clear that 30 to 40 per cent of the workforce cannot be retrained or re- skilled. So, assume that half of this workforce can continue to work on old skills, then balance will become redundant.

"So, the number of people who will become redundant in the next three years will be about five to six lakhs. This will workout to, on a average, between 1.75 lakh to 2 lakh per year for next three years," Lakshmikanth explained. Read more

In 2 weeks, Hindi version of Baahubali 2 beats lifetime earnings of Dangal

It was released in over 6,500 screens across India, and in 9,000 plus screens worldwide

In just 14 days since its release, the Hindi dubbed version of filmmaker SS Rajamouli magnum opus 'Baahubali 2: The Conclusion' has crossed the domestic lifetime collection of Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan's sports drama film 'Dangal'.

Filmmaker Karan Johar, who has presented the Hindi version of 'Baahubali 2: The Conclusion', on Friday shared on Twitter that the film has minted Rs 390.25 crore, surpassing the lifetime business of 'Dangal', which collected Rs 387.38 crore domestically. 'Dangal' had earlier this year became Bollywood's highest grosser in the country.

Alongside an image revealing the Hindi collection of the film in India, Karan tweeted: "The reigning film. 'Baahubali 2: The Conclusion'."

The film, featuring Prabhas, Anushka Shetty, Rana Daggubati and Tamannaah in the lead, released in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam in over 6,500 screens across India, and in 9,000 plus screens worldwide.

The Hindi version of 'Baahubali 2: The Conclusion' has now become the highest grossing film in Bollywood and is eyeing the Rs 400 crore club, said trade expert Taran Adarsh.

"Baahubali 2: The Conclusion is a one-horse race. Collects Rs 390.25 crore in two weeks... All set to start a new club for Hindi films: Rs 400 crore club," Adarsh posted on Twitter on Friday.

The worldwide box office collection of "Baahubali 2: The Conclusion" has already surpassed the Rs 1,000 crore mark. This is the first time that an Indian film has managed to rake in that much money.

Live music events are pulling in crowds and brands; despite ticket prices going up by 33%

As Justin Bieber swayed to shrieking and swooning fans at Mumbai’s DY Patil stadium on Wednesday, getting into paroxysms of delight backstage was a small group that had spent the past year getting the grand spectacle off the ground. Bieber’s show has brought in Rs 20 crore in ticket sales and at least double the amount in sponsorship from 11 brands. As live music events get more popular and fill up stadia with capacities of 60,000 plus attendees, it has become a lucrative way to milk the business of music.

According to a 2017 report on media and entertainment by FICCI-KPMG, live events as a category is growing by 20-25 per cent a year (this includes sports) and organisers say, return on investment in music is steadily on the rise as audiences and companies queue up for a slice of the concert experience. A Global Citizen concert that had Coldplay performing in the city last year sold tickets between Rs 5,000-25,000. Bieber tickets were priced in the same range but a special set that came loaded with backstage passes and Bieber memorabilia went as high as Rs 76,000.

An upcoming concert by singer Ed Sheeran in November this year is expected to take both ticket prices and sponsor involvement further up a notch. Hindi music artist Arijit Singh’s performances go for Rs 1,000-25,000 (as per his last concert in New Delhi in April) and he draws in an impressive list of sponsors.

Live music events have turned big revenue earners in a country known for its penchant for song and dance. For singers, this helps offset the severe loss in income due to digital streaming and piracy; for the rest (event organisers, broadcasters), it is an opportunity to cash in on the growing desire to be a part of a live experience. This is the reason, analysts say, the live events business in music is growing at the industry average of 25 per cent and drawing in the brands with big bucks. (more)

Rajamouli's juggernaut rolls on: Baahubali 2 grosses Rs 600 crore worldwide

One trade analyst even said that the movie might have grossed Rs 710 crore already

Baahubali 2: The Conclusion has grossed at least Rs 600 crore in worldwide box-office collections, according to IndiaToday.

As reported earlier, as of Tuesday, the film's Indian gross business stood at Rs 395 crore approximately, while overseas business had been over $18-19 million in three days only (excluding previews). The worldwide figures, at Rs 506 crore, are for the three-day weekend and do not include previews, including which the total goes above Rs 520 crore, according to Box Office India. (Read more)

With this, SS Rajamouli’s epic extravaganza is more than half way through to becoming the first Indian motion picture to gross Rs 1,000 crore at the box office. The first part had opened to blockbuster collections in the range of Rs 50 crore on Day 1 and gone on to collect a massive Rs 650 crore (gross) at the worldwide box-office.

In fact, Trade analyst Ramesh Bala went a step further and said the film had already grossed Rs 710 crore.

The film, starring Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Anushka Shetty and Tamannaah, continues to shatter box office records. It netted Rs 320-325 crore over the first three days of its release. Having collected more than Rs 125 crore over the first weekend in its Hindi format, it even broke Aamir Khan-starrer Dangal's record, which had collected around Rs 107 crore.

Filmmaker Karan Johar called the film "Indian Cinema's crowning glory" as he tweeted late on Tuesday that it had grossed Rs 383 crore in all the four languages it was released in.

Johar has a reason to rejoice. After all, his Dharma Productions marketed and distributed the Hindi-dub version of the movie. Johar also called the movie a "cinema revolution" due to its earnings on Monday.

However, perhaps the richest praise garnered by the movie, given its South Indian cast and crew, has been superstar Rajinikanth's tweet, where he called Baahubali 2 "Indian cinema's pride".

Ticket sales data from last week had already pointed towards an unprecedented run for the film at the box office.

Online entertainment ticketing platform BookMyShow said it had so far sold over 3.3 million tickets for Baahubali 2, which was released across the country on Friday, or 12 tickets every second a day before the release of S S Rajamouli's magnum opus. (Read more)

With this, Baahubali 2, which released was in over 6,000 screens, has created an all-time record high on BookMyShow for advance ticket sales surpassing Baahubali 1 by over 350 per cent.

As the countdown to April 28 begins, the audience is gearing up for the release of ' Baahubali 2 : The Conclusion' in its quest to find out 'Why Kattappa Killed Baahubali', a question that surprised the audience -- and also became a major marketing hook line later -— at the end of the first part, 'Baahubali: The Beginning'.

'Baahubali: The Beginning', released on July 10, 2015, was a highly successful film at the box office. The first movie in the series was released in over 4,000 screens, grossing over Rs 600 crore worldwide. The film was a success in all the languages of its release -- Telugu, Tamil, Hindi and Malayalam -— which is a rare feat. The movie was shot in Telugu and Tamil, and dubbed in Hindi and Malayalam. The second part is also being released in all these languages.

Both parts of the heavily VFX-driven fictional war film have been made at a combined production cost of about Rs 450 crore, the highest ever in India.

After the huge success of the first part, advance bookings of the concluding sequel have been very strong, and analysts expect it to create new box office records like never before.

Asked whether the film could be a game changer looking at its unprecedented hype, film trade analyst Sreedhar Pillai said, "It has the potential to be a game changer, but content is the ultimate thing. However, the way it's being promoted and looking at the advance bookings and expectations, it is definitely a game changer."(more)
